Der besessene Gegenstand wird als Possessum (von lateinisch possideo, possido βbesitzen, in Besitz nehmenβ), der Besitzer als Possessor bezeichnet. Der Besitz ist die Possession. Inalienabel sind meist KΓΆrperteile, Raumteile und Verwandtschaftsbezeichnungen. Lucien LΓ©vy-Bruhl hat diese Unterscheidung eingefΓΌhrt. Hansjakob Seiler bezeichnet die inalienable Beziehung als relational.

Besitzartanzeige auΓerhalb einer Nominalgruppe
Viele indogermanische Sprachen haben die MΓΆglichkeit, die UnverΓ€uΓerlichkeit von GegenstΓ€nden durch externe Possessoren anzuzeigen. Das Deutsche bringt die UnverΓ€uΓerlichkeit durch ein Dativobjekt zu Ausdruck. VerΓ€uΓerlichte GegenstΓ€nde werden hingegen βinternβ innerhalb einer Nominalgruppe durch einen Genitiv oder durch ein Demonstrativpronomen zum Ausdruck gebracht. Der Nachteil dieses Konzeptes ist, dass bei SΓ€tzen ohne indirekte ObjektergΓ€nzung die Beschreibung der AlienabilitΓ€t nicht mΓΆglich ist.
Beispiele fΓΌr externe Possessoren:
β’ βHans schnitt ihm die Haare.β β Die Haare sind als Teil seines KΓΆrpers unverΓ€uΓerlich.
β’ βEr putzt dem Kind die Nase.β β Die Nase ist als KΓΆrperteil unverΓ€uΓerlich.
β’ UnzulΓ€ssig wΓ€re: βHans schnitt seine Haare.β oder βEr putzt die Nase des Kindes.β
Beispiele fΓΌr interne Possessoren:
β’ βEr putzt die Fenster seines Hauses.β β Ein Fenster ist als eine Sache verΓ€uΓerlich.
Falsch wΓ€re deshalb einen externen Possessor zu setzen: βEr putzt dem Haus die Fenster.β
Keltische Sprachen, aber auch das Englische kennen diese semantische Unterscheidung nicht. Im Englischen muss der Besitz stets innerhalb einer Nominalgruppe durch ein Demonstrativpronomen oder durch einen Genitiv oder eine PrΓ€positionalkonstruktion beschrieben werden.
Beispiele:
β’ βHans cuts his hair.β Falsch wΓ€re: βHans cuts him the hair.β
